For a lot of folks, it's not that they can't purge or edit themselves, it's that they don't know how to start. Just remember, everyone's brains work a little different, so if something doesn't work for you - that is okay - you just have to find out what does.
To start out - pick a small space. Car, Bedroom, 1 Closet. Go through and take everything out - taking inventory. Make a spot for 2 piles. Keep and Donate. As you go through the items ask your self, do I need it? Do I use it? If your answer to either of those is no, put it in a donate pile. If the answer is yes - put it in the keep pile.
Once it is all cleaned out, clean your space. Whether that is dusting it, vacuuming it, wiping it down.
Look at your keep pile. Evaluate what all is in there and how it will fit in your space now. Do you need to get any items to help organize that space before you put stuff back in?
You will feel so accomplished if you get one space done that it will give you the energy needed to do the next one. But remember, there is no race - do it at your own pace on your own time.
